To maximize the benefits of the vegan diet, there are some things you should know. I have broken them down for you in this article.
Some Say The Vegan Diet Is Not Complete
Most of the time, the people that think like this are very uninformed.
They really don’t know too much about eating this way, and may have heard or read something from a bad source.
These vegan diet guidelines, if done properly can contribute to your health in so many wonderful ways.
Always get your information from a reliable source, whether its diet or anything else.
Get it from someone who is already successfully doing it.
There is a right and wrong way to do just about anything.
Why Do Some Vegans Look So Skinny?
There are also skinny looking people on other diets for that matter.
It could be for many reasons. I admit it doesn’t look good.
But right away some people think that the vegan diet is the culprit.
It may be, but not all the time. There are some very fit and healthy looking Vegans.
I will give myself as an example, I am around 200 lbs, and I am not skinny by a long shot.
People that have the belief that all Vegans are skinny and malnourished looking would never know that some people are vegans because they don’t fit their mind description.
When I went from eating meat to a vegan diet, I did lose some weight, and it was weight I didn’t want to lose.
I wasn’t eating properly. I was eating nutritious food, but not calorie dense food that I needed because I was an athlete.
I always kept myself in shape with weights, and didn’t want to lose muscle.
I looked for someone already successfully doing it. It was much harder when I started, because I didn’t have a computer and the world wide web.
But now there is so much info at your fingertips. You need to sift through it though, because there is still a lot of junk out there.
What Should I Avoid?
You need to avoid junk food. There is an abundance of vegan junk food available these days. The manufacturers are getting involved because vegan is getting more and more popular.
Try to avoid most processed foods, they are not health promoting.
When you consume these a lot you will be lacking many important nutrients in your diet. A few here and there might be OK.
I know they taste pretty good and are convenient, but they are not what your body needs to thrive.
Your body needs whole foods as close to nature as possible. Not potato chips but the potato is fine.
Well actually I crisp my own thinly sliced potatoes in the oven with no oil and my own seasoning, and they turn out pretty good.
There are air fryers on the market now, that I want to try. I heard they are pretty good.
Always look at the ingredients, and if there is something you can’t pronounce, then it is probably not good for you, and you’d be better off not eating it.
They put a lot of chemicals and preservatives in processed foods so they can stay on the shelf a long time. These things can be very harmful to your body. Avoid them!
My Doctor Said Not To Go Vegan
Keep in mind that most medical doctors may not know a lot about the vegan diet and will not recommend it.
In all their years of schooling to be a doctor, they have very little if any education about nutrition, this is not the doctors fault. The medical schools need to start prioritizing nutritional education much more then they are now.
They are the wrong person to ask about this diet, unless they are one themselves. There are a few medical doctors that are vegans. If you happen to have one of these for your doctor you are very fortunate. Also, the doctors that know a lot about nutrition actually learned it on their own, not in medical school.
Medical doctors are extremely important and knowledgeable for medical advice, but if you want to know something about diet or nutrition, you have to make sure they are educated in the vegan diet and nutrition.
I Don’t Know What To Eat
You can never go wrong with eating whole plant foods. They are what you want to eat mostly in your vegan diet.
When you consume whole plant food, you are giving your body something that it instantly recognizes and knows what to do with.
Some may ask what is whole plant food? It is food that is the least processed, pretty much right from the farm to your table.
Such as fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, beans,legumes, raw nuts and seeds. These are the best.
Now there are some mildly processed foods that are fine too, such as sprouted whole grain breads, whole grain cereals that do not have sugars and oils added.
Plain oatmeal is fine, you can add blueberries, and some raw walnuts, and/or raisins with some unsweetened almond milk.
Did you know that your body rebuilds itself with the foods you eat. if you keep eating a lot of processed foods that do not have many nutrients, your body will get weaker and weaker till it breaks down.
Your Vegan Eating Guide
Here is Dr Greger’s daily dozen checklist to get yourself going. Dr Greger is a vegan that practices what he preaches.
You want to consume multiple servings a day of these.
He says to also supplement with Vitamin B12 2500 mcg cyanocobalamin once a week
And for those not getting enough sun intake, Vitamin D, 2000 IUs of D3 a day
By doing this and consuming these foods as close to nature as possible, you will be giving your body the things it needs to make even healthier cells and as a result you will have a healthier body.
Everybody wants a healthy body. But not everyone is willing to eat the way it takes to have one.
I find it easier and easier to eat this way. You will too. I enjoy my food and do not miss any of the animal foods that I used to love. They are replaced with whole plant foods that I love.
I am now 58 years old and I am also an athlete. I have no regrets of this wonderful diet. I know some people don’t want to hear about vegan, but I love sharing and helping the people that do.
